This column in Dubai’s Gulf News on the widely held conspiracy theories. It was a little long, so the editors cut it a bit. They deleted one paragraph that I wanted to share:

One of my saddest memories of the Sept. 11 attacks is four large pieces of white paper that hung inside the newsroom for months after the attacks. On those sheets, we wrote down the names of the 147 people who died aboard the two flights from Boston. Each name had a couple of checkmarks beside it—one for whether we’d obtained a picture of the person and another for whether we’d covered their funeral yet. I walked past this list every day and tried mightily to not forget the real lives of the people it represented. We published a lot of funeral stories in the fall of 2001, giving each person their own special day of remembrance. They deserved no less.
