Somebody took the time to create a Wikipedia entry for the 1988 Carl Weathers film “Action Jackson.” The Internet truly creates a long tail.

Kudos to Nancy Pelosi for visiting the Dalai Lama:

Pelosi’s visit to the Dalai Lama in Dharmsala, India, on Friday was the first by a major foreign official since the protests broke out. The Democratic leader said if people don’t speak out against China’s oppression in Tibet, “we have lost all moral authority to speak on behalf of human rights anywhere in the world.”

Good point.

A store dedicated to popcorn. And it’s closed down? Imagine that. Perhaps they shouldn’t have specialized in Chicago-style popcorn. Maybe Sante Fe or Grand Rapids-style popcorn would’ve been a more popular choice.

Ah, popcorn. Ah, humanity.

I believe that the world and its people are fundamentally good.

I know some people may disagree. But, you can either point to the video above and embrace my outlook, or you can point to all the terrible things in the world and embrace an opposing view.

It takes faith either way.

The discussion page for the Wikipedia article on the Muhammad Cartoons controversy is fascinating reading. Makes it clear that the debate over keeping the pictures of the cartoons is over — and they won’t be removed.

Gotta love this warning: “This article may attract censorship. Please keep in mind that Wikipedia is not censored.”

Here’s a great blog from a journalist who covers eastern Europe and Russia. She just posted great everyday-life photos of Istanbul.

My commode problems have been fixed. Paid a plumber $425 to come out and show me where my “clean-out” pipe was located. He ran a snake down and pulled out the tree roots that were clogging it up. I could’ve easily done this with my 25′-foot snake but didn’t know to look for the clean-out pipe. Knowledge is money.

Just ripped the carpet out of the bathroom. The job was unpleasant to say the least. Upside — I’m going to go ahead and pull out the toilet and cabinetry. No better time than right now. Figure I’ll get me one of them fancy low-flow commodes they’ve been talking about. Gonna replace the carpet with tile.

Suddenly, it’s a big project. But, not this big.

Here’s a funny post from somebody’s Facebook page:

im in a coffee shop called pj’s. it blows. i don’t know why i come here. it is always empty. maybe it reminds me of myself. or maybe i want to give it business since the starbuck’s down the street is schooling it in latte sales. the inside is mostly dark red, with shiny concrete floors. it usually smells like a coffee shop. at the moment there is one other customer in here with me. he is on his cellular tele and he just finished his iced frazzle dazzle berry brilliant tea. he’s wearing a jean shirt. remind me never to wear a jean shirt. he just went into the bathroom. what do you think, number one or two? oh, number one, that was quick. and he’s gone. oh well. goodbye man in the blue jean shirt. i hate goodbyes.

That strikes me as quite funny — not sure why. Anyhoo, his name is Thomas J. Flynn — so if he ever Googles his name, he’ll find this post.

Hello, Thomas J. Flynn!

Showdown with rioters looms in Tibet

posted on March 17, 2008 at 1:56 pm

Here’s a report from the only Western journalist reporting from Llassa:

Last night I gazed out over a deserted city. After two days of deadly riots and arson attacks, the people of Lhasa hunkered down before a midnight deadline and a feared military crackdown.

Rubble and burnt-out vehicles littered the streets, but few people dared to set foot in the narrow and winding alleyways, fearful of turning a blind corner and running into an army patrol. Only the occasional gunshot rang out over the city, the whoops and cheers of the rioters silenced. Amid claims that many people have been killed in the most dramatic backlash against Chinese rule for almost 20 years, a showdown looms tonight. The rioters must turn themselves in by midnight or face the consequences.

Doesn’t look good.
