Here the first paragraph from The Economist obituary for Bobby Fischer:

PEOPLE were always coming to get Bobby Fischer. And he was ready for them. In a locked suitcase he kept bottles and bottles of vitamin pills and herbal potions and a large orange-juicer, in case they tried to put toxins in his food. His most precious memorabilia—match notebooks, photo albums, letters from President Nixon—were kept in a filing cabinet in a safe behind two combination locks in a ten-by-ten storage room in Pasadena, California. In the end, as he railed to radio talk-show hosts in Hungary and the Philippines, even all this couldn’t keep him safe from Russians, or Jews, or “CIA rats who work for the Jews”. But he had tried.

The best obituaries in the business.

Well, this sucks:

The Wall Street Journal’s Web site, WSJ.com, will keep a significant portion of its content behind its paid-subscription wall, News Corp. Chairman Rupert Murdoch said Thursday.

Speculation that News Corp. would make WSJ.com a completely free site had been rife in recent months, since Mr. Murdoch had signaled he was contemplating lifting the subscription wall. Mr. Murdoch had indicated that lifting the pay wall could broaden the Journal’s online audience and boost its Web advertising revenue, offsetting any loss in subscription revenues.

I had hoped the WSJ would go free. I wonder if this is a good move longterm. I’m finding that the NY Times news articles are showing up a lot more in my normal Googling. Gotta be great for them, long-term.

Here’s more good journalism:

The Clintons have also assailed Mr. Obama for praising President Ronald Reagan and remarking upon the Republican Party’s dominance in past policy debates — even though Mr. Obama was not endorsing those policies and was limiting his praise to Reagan’s communication abilities (something the Clintons have previously praised).

The parenthetical is just offering a little bit of fact to help straighten out the record. Always good to see public officials called on their crap.

Interesting column on the legacy of George W. Bush from the BBC’s Washington Reporter. By the way, the BBC is now one of my daily news sites — not sure why it wasn’t already.

Look, you’re just not going to find candy canes for any cheaper than right now. This is the final reduction. If you’re looking to buy cheap, off-season candy canes, then now is the time to act.

Looking for a great toy for your pre-teen girl? How about the “Tneez Groove Mall Playset.”

… this mall is sure to inspire big time fun for girls. Embark on an afternoon of entertainment and style in this radical mall that includes lights and sounds. Shop til your heart’s content, catch a flick at the movie theater, grab your popcorn at the lighted machine, glide along the sidewalk, or move ‘n groove to funky Tneez songs on the light-up dance floor.

Great. I wasn’t sure if my daughter would properly receive the “shopping makes you happy” message from commercials on television. Now with this playset, I can rest assured knowing that she truly understands how much fun shopping at the mall can be.

We Americans require a lot of storage containers.

I’m embarrassed to admit how much I enjoyed this film.

So, my class and I acted out a scene from “Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan”:

Duffy: “Oh no, Captain Kirk. I have done far worse than kill you. I have hurt you. And I wish to go on hurting you. I shall leave you as you left me, as you left her, marooned at the center of a dead planet. Buried alive, buried alive.”

Communications Research Class:”Khan!”

Click here to listen. (Another great use for Jott.)

OK, I’m back — I’ll tell you the rest of that story later. Gotta teach right now…
